Playing under the name Ernest M. Henry Post 438 faced the Gulf Coast Office Products (A), for the first time in
American Legion play, at Kirsch Rooney baseball field for 1pm Saturday June, 27.

Saturday’s game was the first in six days, due to a week of rain. The Ernest M. Henry Post 438 were anxious to get back on the diamond after falling short by 1 in the previous game against Ponstein’s.

Starting the game off on the mound was #13 Ryan Strippling for Ernest M. Henry Post 438 . As the Gulf Coast Office Products (A) team came up, Strippling and the defense sat them down, to get off to a good start.

Pitching for Gulf Coast Office Products (A) was #1 Pike Philbert who found himself in trouble early, as the Purple Knights came up to the plate with hot bats, from CF #11 Jardy Montgomery, SS #4 Jeffrey Duroncelay, DH #5 Kenya Huggins, C #18 Kabrel Johnson, LF #14 Jalen Pierce, to load the bases, for 1st Baseman #1 Leon Franklin, with two outs. Unfortunately the runners would be stranded on the bags, as Newman pitcher #1 Pike Philbert, would strike out Franklin to end the inning.

TOP 2ND INNING
With #13 Ryan Strippling still on the mound for Ernest M. Henry Post 438, 3rd Baseman #17 William Hewitt would send a shot right to 1st Baseman #1 Leon Franklin for the out, followed by 1st Baseman #23 Watson Scriber who would be thrown out at 1st base from the SS #3 Shannon Martin. That would bring up Pitcher #1 Pike Philbert who’d take a base on balls, which would be short lived as SS #7 Sam Milvid, hit a grounder to the SS #3 Martin, to throw Milvid out at 1st base.

BOTTOM 2ND INNING
The hot bats for Ernest M. Henry Post 438  would continue, this time, paying dividends, as SS #2 Shannon Martin would get on base with balls, that would have him on 2nd base in the blink of an eye, as RF #15 Nijal Johnson was batting, Philbert threw an errand pitch, that the catcher couldn’t retrieve, which led to Johnson, getting on 1st base with balls. For the Greenies, RF #21 Jack Cook, as well as 2nd Baseman #11 Casey Dantin, would get on base from balls. Next to bat was C #5 Jack Robert, but an errand pitch from Strippling would advance the runners to scoring positions. Robert would flyout to CF leading to a runner scoring. LF #6 Iv Guillot would get on base from balls, than DH #18 Sam Zurik would flyout to 2nd base. 3rd Baseman #17 William Hewitt would come up also, during which runners would advance from an errand pitch from the mound, followed by Hewitt being, struck out to end inning.

For Ernest M. Henry Post 438 leading things off, DH #5 Kenya Huggins was struck out, but this inning would be the one to create distance as the Ernest M. Henry Post 438 got on a roll, brining up C #18 Kabrel Johnson who’d hit a single to CF – #7 Jahmal Shelby came in to run for Johnson, than advancing to 2nd on pitcher Philbert errand throw. LF #14 Jalen Pierce would come up to bat and Shelby steals 3rd base as Pierce would get on base from balls. 1st Baseman #1 Leon Franklin would be in the batters box, allowing Pierce to steal 2nd. Franklin would get on base from balls, leading to the bases being loaded. 3rd Baseman #22 Landon Williams was hit by a pitch, bringing in a score, with the bases still loaded.

At bat was #13 Strippling who’d fly out to RF, sending home a runner for another score, brining up #2 Shannon Martin. The pitcher would balk, sending home another runner, as #2 Martin would flyout to RF to end inning, as Ernest M. Henry Post 438 kept the pressure on, scoring 3 in the inning.

Coach Rey made a pitching change, putting #22 Landon Williams Jr. on the mound, who along with the defense, got to work, quickly, striking out #23 Watson Scriber, allowing #1 Pike Philbert a base on balls and #7 Sam Milvid singled to LF, but those two on base wouldn’t last long, as #21 Jack Cook would flyout to LF, followed by #11 Casey Dantin single to LF, sending home a runner for a score. The inning came to a close as #5 Jack Robert flew out to CF.

This is the inning the tide would change for Ernest M. Henry Post 438 as #6 Iv Guillot grounded to SS, who was thrown out at 1st Base. #18 Sam Zurik would come up to bat, who’d take a base on balls, than #17 William Hewitt single to SS, followed by #23 Watson Scriber single to RF, sending home a runner. #1 Pike Philbert flew out to LF, before #7 Sam Milvid would get to 1st base on balls, bringing up #21 Jack Cook taking a base on balls, which scored another runner, cutting into Ernest M. Final innings, due to time constraints. With Johnson still on the mound, it was imperative, for he and the defense to not allow Newman to score, giving Ernest M. Henry Post 438 an opportunity to take the lead and win. Gulf Coast Office Products (A) would send out #6 Iv Guillot, who would flyout to CF, followed by #18 Sam Zurik double to CF. #17 William Hewitt, next at bat, would single to LF, sending Zurik home for the score, giving Gulf Coast Office Products (A) the lead. #23 Watson Scriber would come up to bat, grounding out to 1st base. In to pinch hit was #26 Will Randle who’d take a base on balls, although in position to increase the lead, #7 Sam Milvid would pop up and flyout to the 1st baseman, #1 Leon Franklin

BOTTOM 6TH INNING
Here we go, the final inning to an exciting back and forth game, could Ernest M. Henry Post 438 , close it out and walk off with the W? Starting off for Ernest M. Henry Post 438 was #1 Leon Franklin who sent a grounder to 3rd base, but was thrown out at 1st base. That brought #12 Genesis Prosper up to the plate, getting on base, on balls. #13 Ryan Strippling would be next to bat, as Prosper advanced to 2nd base, on an errand pitch, than advancing to 3rd base on a balk by the pitcher. At that point, Newman made a pitching change, putting #6 Iv Guillot on the mound. With a runner on 3rd, in scoring position, to tie the game up, Strippling was hit by a pitch, taking 1st base. Next to bat was #2 Shannon Martin, Strippling advanced to 2nd on a steal. A balk on the pitcher, put Martin on 1st base. #9 Chris Crawford had the opportunity to drive home a run, by finding a gap in the defense, but an errand pitch, from the mound that the catcher couldn’t hold on to, allowed Prosper to cross home plate for the tie game. After which, Crawford was struck out, but Ernest M. Henry Post 438 were still in scoring positions, in spite of 2 outs. #11 Jardy Montgomery had the chance to drive home the winning run, which is exactly what he did, with a single up the middle, sending Strippling home for Ernest M. Henry Post 438 exciting, end of game victory.
