Boys Varsity Baseball · St. Augustine student receives academic grant from Jack Fielkow Scholarship Program

Herbert Watts, a Five-Year Member of the Youth Academy, will receive $2,000 to Assist with Room & Board Expenses at Prairie View A&M University

New Orleans MLB Youth Academy member and St. Augustine High School senior Herbert Watts has been named recipient of the 2020 Jack Fielkow Scholarship Program. Watts will receive a $2,000 scholarship for demonstrating academic achievement, community participation and leadership skills.

The Jack Fielkow Scholarship, awarded annually, will assist with room and board costs, as well as tuition. Watts was selected by a committee including son of Jack Fielkow and Chief Executive Officer of the Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans, Arnie Fielkow.

Watts, a former 5-year member of the New Orleans MLB Youth Academy, also received an athletic scholarship to play baseball at Prairie View A&M University where he will major in Biology. In 2019, along with his team from the New Orleans MLB Youth Academy, Watts traveled to All-Star Week in Cleveland and competed in the annual All-Star Commissioner’s Cup.

“We are extremely proud of what Herbert has been able to achieve,” said Eddie Davis, Director of the New Orleans MLB Youth Academy Eddie Davis. “We look forward to continuing to root for him, and possibly welcoming him back to the Academy for some collegiate tournaments.”

“My family and I are proud to award the 2020 Jack Fielkow Scholarship to Herbert”, said Arnie Fielkow. “Herbert is a most deserving award winner and we wish him well as he pursues both his academic and athletic dreams. My Dad, Jack, was a great sports enthusiast and it is our family’s honor to award these scholarships annually.”

In 2011, Arnie Fielkow made a $40,000 donation in his father’s name, with local banks matching the contribution, to establish the Jack Fielkow Scholarship Program. Each year, the program funds two $2,000 college scholarships annually, one awarded to a participant from the New Orleans MLB Youth Academy and one from the New Orleans-based mentoring program, Each One Save One. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, only one recipient was selected in 2020.
