How do you incorporate critical thinking skills into a lesson plan and at the same time allow students to be creative, while preparing to compete against each other? Ms. Barthelemy’s  Public Speaking students in grades nine through eleven put away uniforms and books to hold court in class today as part of their Mock Trial presentations.

The students, dressed in suits and prepared with their legal documents, argued cases involving juveniles detained in adult facilities, discrimination lawsuits, banning of metal detectors and grooming issues. The students portrayed attorneys, witnesses, bailiffs, and members of a jury for the exercise. Tomorrow (Friday, February 3, 2017) is part 2, with a different group of Public Speaking students.
